Fare policies:
All COAST Routes:
- All fares are regardless of distance traveled.
- Have exact change ready as the bus approaches. Dollar bills MUST be unfolded. Fare evasion is illegal and punishable by law. DRIVERS DO NOT MAKE CHANGE. You cannot pay for "both ways" when you board the first bus.
- Children under
5 years of age ride FREE. Children under 12 years of age may not ride unaccompanied.
- Monthly passes are available for $52. Monthly passes are good for unlimited rides on all COAST and Wildcat Transit Routes. Monthly passes are not available at "half-fare" discounts. If you are eligible for half-fare, buying a monthly pass is not recommended. Click here to download the monthly pass form.
- Any passenger displaying a UNH ID, Wildcat Transit monthly pass, or UNH Library Card rides at no charge on all COAST routes. COAST passes are also accepted on all Wildcat Transit routes.
- Any passenger displaying a Great Bay Community College ID rides at no charge on all COAST routes.
GBCC IDs are not accepted on Wildcat Transit routes.
- COAST 15-ride punch tickets (available on any COAST bus for $20 cash) are accepted on all COAST routes. However, it is recommended that they be used primarily on Routes 1, 2, 6 and 7. The value of the $20, 15-ride punch ticket is based on 15 rides at the $1.50 fare (a 10% discount). The 15-ride punch tickets are NOT accepted on Wildcat Transit routes!
Dover Community Routes 30, 31, 32: Students of Dover High School ride on these routes only at no charge.
Dover FastTrans Routes 33, 34: On-Call stops on these routes only are an additional 50 cents above the normal fare.
Fare guidelines
- How do I pay for my bus? COAST is a pay-as-you-board system - just bring exact change with you to the bus stop. When you get on the bus, you drop the money into the silver farebox next to the driver. If you have a ticket or pass, you must present it as you board the bus. You can buy tickets and passes from the COAST office (some tickets may be available on board the bus, see above).
- Using correct denominations of bills (as in, using a $1.00 bill) is the responsibility of the passenger. COAST cannot be held responsible for passengers who mistakenly overpay. For example, if you mistakenly place a $10.00 bill in the farebox, it cannot be returned to you under any circumstances. Take care to place the correct bill in the farebox.
- Fare is dictated by route, not by the vehicle operating the route. For example, the 7:25pm run of Route 2N during the week is operated by a COAST trolley bus. The fare is $1.50 for Route 2, despite the use of a trolley bus on that run.
- COAST drop tickets (small white perforated tickets) are accepted on all routes. Drop tickets are only available through special services. A single drop ticket is good for one trip on any COAST or Wildcat Route.
Half-Fare
Policy:
Effective August 1st, 2009, COAST will enforce the half-fare policy consistently on all routes, requiring that passengers show or be able to show proof of eligibility. Many people are eligible for half-fare due to their age or because they hold a Medicare card. If you fall into these groups, there is no real change, except that drivers will be more stringent about seeing a photo ID or Medicare card. However, if you believe you are eligible for half-fare based on a disability and do not hold a Medicare card, you may want to complete a half-fare application and send it to COAST.
Half-fare
privileges are extended to elderly (65 years and older), disabled, and
individuals possessing a valid Medicare Card. To qualify, please show the
bus driver one of the following upon boarding:
- Photo ID showing proof of age
(for elderly only);
- COAST ADA Eligibility Card and Photo ID;
- COAST
Half-fare card and Photo ID;
- Medicare Card and Photo ID.
The half fare policy applies to COAST's fixed route service during all hours of
operation, but is not applicable to COAST's ADA service.
Please download and print a Half-Fare application. You can complete the application and return it to COAST:
