Volunteer Driver Program

Program begins October 2018. Accepting volunteer applications now!


COAST and the City of Portsmouth are partnering to help Portsmouth seniors and adults with disabilities get free transportation to and from their healthcare appointments. 

Help keep Portsmouth healthy by using your own car to drive seniors and adults with disabilities to their medical appointments! 

Volunteer when it's convenient for you - as often or as infrequently as you'd like. No long-term commitment required. 

Receive $0.35 per mile while transporting passengers. 

 

All Volunteers Must:

  • Be at least 21 years old and have at least 5 years of safe driving experience. 
  • Have a reliable, clean vehicle and auto insurance. 
  • Successfully complete a background check.
  • Complete defensive driving course and customer service training.

This application will be used to established your eligibility as a volunteer for COAST. The information you provide helps us assure you, this organization, and the community, that the highest standards of safety and accountability are maintained. 

We appreciate your cooperation and your interest in our Volunteer Driver Program!

Safe Driving History

A positive response to the following questions will not necessarily preclude you from volunteering. 

 

Have you ever had your driver's license suspended, revoked, or refused?
Has an insurance company ever refused, canceled, non-renewed, or given notice of intention to non-renew automobile insurance to you?
Have you been convicted during the last 10 years of driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs?
Have you had any moving violations or citations (other than parking) that you have been convicted of, forfeited bail, or paid any fines for during the past 3 years?

Acknowledgement 

  • I attest that the information supplied is true and accurate, and that I have not and will not withhold any information that would unfavorably affect my application for a volunteer position.
  • I understand that misrepresentations or omissions may be cause for my immediate rejection as an applicant for a volunteer position with COAST or my termination as a volunteer.
  • I understand that I will be required to sign an Authorization for a Background Check as part of the volunteer application process. 
  • I understand that any offer of a volunteer position is dependent on results of the background check.
  • I further understand that my position as a volunteer may be terminated immediately without cause and without notice at the sole discretion of COAST.

Transport passengers with medical equipment (such as an oxygen tank or walker)?
Transport passengers with seeing eye/service dogs?
Have a passenger install an infant/child car seat in your vehicle?
Help a passenger carry groceries/packages to their door?
